Protective Charm

Korewori, East Sepik Provence PNG 19th Century or earlier

This rare and wonderfully conceived sculpture was created from the bark of a tree. It was carved with non-metal tools. The legs form a loop connecting to a body that is richly decorated; quite possibly like the Ewa figures from the same region. The over-sized head is fantastic; carved in deep relief with large robust features. From its natural form the slight concave shape enhances the beauty of the figure. A pre-contact charm from this scarce region with its level of pedigree make this a truly important object.

This charm stands 6.5 inches tall.
