Hampatong Guardian Figure
Hampatong
Tunjung, East Kalimantan, Borneo
Early 20th Century
Provenance: Alain Schoffel, France. Julio Herraiz, Spain
These guardian figures were erected near entrances to dwellings in villages. Slid onto large architectural forms, these objects were carved to protect the inhabitants of the village. This imposing male figure is depicted standing, wearing a detailed headdress. The ornate decoration on the base suggests that it represents a person of high rank. It has exaggerated features, bulging eyes, open mouth, and its crossed arms stance; strikes a presence that exudes power and authority. What is also compelling about this figure is that it has a two dimensional quality, despite the thinness of the wood used to create the sculpture.
