Ritual Bowl
Igbo, Izzi region, Nigeria
Early 20th c
Provenance: Michael Oliver collection, NYC
This distinctive bowl is crafted in the form of an abstracted face. Its eyes are represented by raised nodules, flanked by two horizontal bands. A raised vertical line indicates the nose, while the large opening represents the mouth. Beneath the nose, two small openings symbolize nostrils. On both sides of the bowl, ears are depicted as wing-like extensions incised with rows of lines. The surface is heavily encrusted with organic matter, suggesting it received many ritual offerings and libations. No definitive research has been conducted to confirm the exact function of these types of vessels.
