The people of Sumba are renowned for their elaborate combs made from tortoiseshell. Young women wear these combs to announce they have entered puberty, a significant milestone in the life of a Sumba woman. The more intricate combs are also worn by noblewomen. This beautiful carving features parrots and horses on both ends. Despite the fragile medium used to create this exquisite comb, it remains in remarkably good condition. Its surface is well-worn and nicely patinated.
