Spear Shaft
Murik Lakes, Papua New Guinea
Early 20th c
Provenance: Marcia and John Friede, Rye, NY. Craig Delora, NJ
Spears are commonly utilized for hunting and warfare, usually lacking embellishment. However, this remarkable specimen stands out with a carved ancestor figure in high relief on what would have been the spear’s lower section. Likely broken from extended use, its owner retained the portion adorned with the carved figure, possibly repurposing it as a personal amulet. The deeply set eyes, enhanced by shell inlays, and the woven rattan attachments encircling the shaft above the figure’s head and one ankle, contribute to its mystical aura. The heavily encrusted and undisturbed patina further enhances its power.
