Ancestor Figure

Batak, Sumatra
19th Century

The Toba blacksmiths of the Batak are revered among their people due to the special powers they are believed to possess. The talent in which this brass casting exhibits is incredible. Female ancestor figures in brass are rare; this example in particular possesses special qualities such as an enigmatic smile and interesting treatment to the hands; the curvature of the fingers are rarely seen. The patina is heavily worn from generations of use and handling; the worn high points speak loudly to this.
