Shrine Figure

Ibo, Nigeria
Early 20th Century

This shrine figure is called Ofo, it consists of a wooden spiked figure with metal decorations, such as rings, pins, plates and other iron objects. This example is very anthropomorphic, the pole like body leads up to an expressive face with a half metal ring representing a mouth which projects an eerie grin. The patina is weathered and rusty from age and exposure; the compilation as a whole is quite similar to western modern sculpture.

This figure stands 16.5 inches tall
