Amulet Figure
Flores, Indonesia
19th c.
Provenance: Guy and Nathalie Porre, Paris
Though small in scale, this amulet possesses exceptional sculptural presence. The attention to detail is remarkable, with clearly delineated hands and feet and elegant negative space between the limbs and body. The eyes are inset with metal, and an additional metal insertion at the back of the head may have been intended to enhance the figure’s potency as a charm. The surface bears a deep, rich patina from prolonged handling and ritual use. Finely carved figures from Flores—particularly of this diminutive scale—are exceedingly rare. This example is in excellent condition.
