Dance Mask

Western Nepal
19th-early 20th c.

Old American collection

In the valleys and foothills of the Himalayas in western Nepal, known as the “Middle Hills,” the ancient pre-Buddhist shamanistic traditions still thrive among tribes such as the Magar, Gurung, and others. These traditions encompass rituals involving shamans, drums, dream-trances that transport individuals into “other worlds,” and the use of masks.

The shaman mask showcased here, originating from the Nepalese “Middle Hills,” is characterized by its simplicity yet profound expressiveness. Carved from hard, brown wood, it features a prominent, domed forehead, large, almost rectangular eyes, a long, tapering nose, and intricately pierced, hooked-shaped ears. The open mouth, appears as though it is speaking. Two serrated metal sheets representing teeth are affixed to the back of the mask. Despite its abstract simplicity, this mask exudes a remarkable presence. Both the front and back surfaces of the mask exhibit a lustrous patina, testament to its extensive use and age.
