Protective Figure
Bafo or Battie, Cameroon
19th Century
Private Belgium collection
This striking and highly stylized figure hails from the grassland area of Cameroon, representing an ancient artifact. The smooth, encrusted patina adorning this figure is the result of repeated rubbings and libations. It likely served as a personal protective charm due to its diminutive size. Notice the rope wrapped around the neck, possibly intended for attaching it to a belt or bag for easier portability. Examples of this age are exceedingly rare to find. At the figure’s back, a deep square opening has been hollowed out; this is where organic substances would have been packed inside to imbue it with magical power.
