Amulet Figure
Korwar, Geelvink Bay, West Papua New Guinea
19th Century
Provenance: Private Old Belgian Collection
Korwar amulets are worn on the body and are believed to impart courage and protection against disaster to men. This particular Korwar amulet figure is remarkable for its size, approaching that of a full-sized ancestor figure. The figure itself sits atop a long post, still bearing the natural bark of the tree. The enlarged head and arrow-shaped nose are distinctive artistic features of the highly conventionalized Korwar tradition. Representing a recently deceased ancestor, these figures held significant importance in Geelvink Bay cultures. This one is depicted seated, with its chin resting on its hands, its body protected by a shield adorned with stylized designs.
