Dance Mask, Pensar Mata Bolong

Bali, Indonesia
Early 20th century

Provenance: Old French collection

This half-mask was used in the topeng performances by the actor representing Pensar Kelihan, the elder brother of the two clown servants to the central character.  This form has large openings for the eyes, allowing the actor to see quite clearly.  The original attached eyebrows and moustache are made from goatskin.  The patina on the back of the mask indicates it was worn repeatedly.
