Guardian Figure
Guardian Figure
Ngaju Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia
19th-early 20th century
Provenance: Philip Goldman collection, UK
Published: The Divine Gifts, fig. 65
The figure is carved in torso form, and has a square opening where the figure’s legs appear to begin. At the bottom is a peg, which most likely indicates this figure was a post of a small altar structure. The Face is very well executed, the eyes protrude and the open mouth with its long split scrolling tongue makes for a very striking expression. The body is stylized and carved in a cubistic fashion. Carved from hard wood, the patina is very dark and encrusted.
