Ancestor Figure

Boiken, Papua New Guinea
Late 19th - Early 20th Century
Provenance: Private German Collection

This stone carved ancestor figure from the Boiken would have been hung by the extended piercing visible on the object’s back. This example is playfully articulated, with oversized features and a slightly turned posture, suggesting movement. The large head with animated facial features and a pierced septum is a common distinguishing feature, and brings this object to life. The unusual representation of the arms is intriguing. Geometric patterns line the jaw, upper arms, and hands of the figure.

Height: 29 in.
