Canoe Prow

Geelvink Bay, West Papua New Guinea
Late 19th - Early 20th Century
Provenance: Hans van Drumpt Collection, Netherlands.

This Canoe Prow, most likely from a fishing canoe, is carved in the form of a Korwar figure. Korwar figures are protective agents. The distinctive hooked facial features are common to Korwar heads and seamlessly connect to a complex curvilinear abstract pattern, which make up the figure’s body. The wood is heavily eroded from contact with water, giving the prow a soft worn texture.

Height: 7 1/2 in.
