Currency

Boiken,East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea
Early 20th Century

This is a fantastic example of the type of currency that is used in the East Sepik Provence mainly for inter village transactions and bride price payments. This complete example with its finely woven rattan mask with heart shaped contour makes this object special.. The large snail shell is original to the piece; but it has been professionally reattached back to the mask. The pigments are old and original.
