Korwar Amulet Figure
Geelvink Bay, West Papua
Early 20th Century

PROVEANCE: Hans van Drumpt Collection, The Netherlands

Said to give men courage and protection against disaster, Korwar amulets were worn on the body. Carved of wood with a small figure at one end, this example is classically fashioned. Intricate lattice like carvings make up the body of the figure, while the square face with an anchored nose is distinctive of Korwar aesthetics. The original European trade beads are still attached to the body of the amulet.

Height: 8 3/4 in.
