Amulet Figure

Korwar, Geelvink Bay, West Papua New Guinea
Provenance: Private Old Belgian Collection

Korwar amulets are worn on the body and are said to give men courage and protection against disaster. Usually made of wood with a small figure at one end, these figures are delicately carved. The body of this example is intricately craved with ornate designs. The square shaped face of the figure is distinctly Korwar. This amulet is a rare find due to the presence of the original red trade fabric and beads attached by hand spun fiber cord. Dry patina.

Height: 7.5 inches
