Yam Mask

Abelam, Papua New Guinea
Late 19th/Early 20th Century
Previous Collection: Old California Collection

Woven and wooden masks are used to decorate large yams during the harvest. This diminutive mask is an ornament used during this ceremony. The classically conceived face is sculpted within a deep facial frame. The features are tightly rendered with beautiful original pigments throughout. This early example was carved with non-metal tools and has a fine encrusted patina from age. In excellent condition.

This mask stands 8.25" tall.
