Ancestor Figure

Maprik, Papua New Guinea
19th Century
Acquired in 1969 from Catholic Mission in Wewak, PNG

This ancient Maprik figure is a fine example. Exuding a strong presence with its tightly carved body and classic face. Important to note is that the original pigments are all still intact, which is remarkable due to this figures age. This example is pierced in the back being that it was hung in a men’s cult house. The septum is also pierced and remnants of a nose ornament can be found. Carved from hardwood with non metal tools.

This figure stands 20 inches tall.
