Ancestor Figure
Bioma, Papuan Gulf, PNG
19th Century
Previous collection: John and Marcia Friede, Rye New York
Collected by Thomas Shultz Westrum in the 1970's

Of surreal form this Bioma figure while small in scale possesses the dynamism of larger figures. The deeply cut designs are very impressive and the pigments are all in-tact and original. It is not only difficult to find examples of this size but also that are carved with non-metal tools. While the facial expression seems charming at first glance, there is an enigmatic presence behind it. There is some weathering to the surface but it is in excellent condition for its age.
