Ceremonial Club

Vanuatu, Oceania
19th Century

This is a graceful example of a Vanuatu club.  Janus in composition; each face has its own personality.  The long nose and diminutive mouth on both faces is a classic characteristic of the Vanuatu rendition of the human face.  The simplicity of this object is what makes it special as well as the deep handled patina that it has acquired from decades of use.  The color of the wood is warm and beautiful as well.  In excellent condition.

This club stands 32 inches tall.
