Ladle Handle

Madang Provence, Lower Sepik River, Papua New Guinea
19th Century
Previous Collection: Roger Budin Collection, Geneva
Sold at Jean Louis Picard Auction, Paris 1991

This old ladle handle from the Madang provence is a magical example. The finely carved heads on the handle have a wonderful flow to them; their brilliant placement gives the illusion of movement. The handle terminates into a well carved figure in classic Lower Sepik style. The pierced septum and varied patina suggest great age.

This handle stands 15 inches in height.
