Dance Mask
Nepal
Early 20th Century

PROVENANCE: Private European Collection

Carved from a dried mushroom, this early 20th century dance mask from Nepal is a unique example of an old tradition. Although simply carved, the mask’s great lines, oval shape, large eyes, and open mouth with defined teeth give the mask strength and mystery. Even the reversed side depicts a face. The dried organic material gives this mask great texture. An old native repair is present on the right side of the mask.
