Stopper to Bamboo Medicine Container

Dayak, Borneo
19th Century

This highly ambitious work of art is a Nagju wooden stopper used to contain the magical substances held in bamboo medicine containers. The body of the figure which is carved seated on a decorated throne is highly detailed. Holding a fan, the ancestor has bracelets that cascade up the arms. A very nice feature of this stopper is how the head perches over the body. The patina is deep and encrusted from libations and years of storage.

This stopper stand 5 inches tall.
