Musket Ball Holder

Batak, Sumatra
19th Century

The elongated face on this bullet holder is very reminiscent of early Batak Masks. This example has inlaid lead decorations probably representing tattoos or body paint. The design on the head is beautifully done and the original wooden stopper is still intact. These bullet holders from the side resemble the hornbill and this example with its great natural curvature is a wonderful example of this. The patina is deep and worn from decades of tribal use.

This holder stands 8 inches tall
