Ancestor Figure, Bulul

Ifugao, Philippines
19th Century

While most Bululs are seated figures this example is standing. With its powerful tilting torso; tense legs and elongated arms; this “Rice god” is reminiscent of primitive man. The face is highly emotive and haunting; in addition, the layered sacrificial surface enhances the memorable imagery. The patina comes from countless libations made throughout the decades. Carved from hardwood, in excellent condition overall.

The Height is 19.5 inches tall.
