Magic Wand

Batak, Sumatra
19th Century
Ex collection: De Silva, The Hague, Holland

This is an early example of a Toba Batak magic wand. The bronze figure is finely cast in classic hunkered position with a deep handled patina from traditional use. Wands with bronze finials were used by priests during important rituals; they are thought to have great power. See “The Batak” by Achim Sibeth pg.128 for a related example.

This wand stands 27.5 inches tall.
