Stopper from Shaman’s Magic Container
Karo Batak, Sumatra
19th Century
This is an excellent example of a Guri-Guri wooden stopper. This sculpture
exudes presence with its superb features. The figure has a haunting expression
and a coiffure with long braids extending to the lower back. Several finely
carved ancestor heads surround the main figure which produces a dramatic
image. The patina is deep and encrusted from years of use and storage.
This Stopper stands 6.5 inches tall.
