Shaman’s Magic Container

Batak (Karo); Sumatra
19th Century
Ex: Irwin Hersey Collection

This magic container is known as a Buli-Buli or goat horn container. The contents are a variety of mysterious magical substances. The wooden stopper on this example is carved with great precision; it has a fantastic expressive face along with a tightly carved hunkered torso. The curvature of the figure flows beautifully into the container; as if they are one. The patina is deep and encrusted from generations of use. In excellent condition.
