Shaman’s Magic Container

Karo Batak, Sumatra
19th Century

This fine diminutive magic container also known as (Buli-Buli) is an exceptional work of art. The container is mountain goat horn while the stopper is wood. The figural stopper has great cubist qualities. Some cubist sculptures tend to look ‘blocky’ or lack movement. This piece remains faithful to cubism but breaks the barriers with a wonderful twist to the body that adds great movement to the object. The face is well carved and still contains its original lead eyes which makes this piece all the more magical.

This container is 7 inches tall.
