Magic Amulet

Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia
Early 20th century

Wooden magic charms are cherished objects to the Dayak people. This is a superb example of a seated ancestor figure with a beautifully realized cat resting above its head. The sensitive features of the face are accentuated by the bold brass tacks inserted into the eyes. The intricately carved hands rest on the figure's knees holding its proud posture. The diminutive feline is incredibly lifelike; it too has brass insertions for eyes. The patina is dark and rich from age and is in excellent condition.

This amulet stands 5.25" in length.
