Ancestor Figure

Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia
19th Century
Provenance: Acquired in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1980, by Bill Helmer, Vancouver, Canada

Hampatong is the collective name for carved wooden ancestor figures among the Dayak in Borneo. This example was fashioned by a very accomplished artisan. The lines are tight and pure; with elements of elegance and power. Features such as the diamond shaped open mouth; claw like hands that drape around the figure; and overall elongation of the limbs make for a strong work of art. Sculpted from Borneo iron wood with the classic aged gray patina. In excellent condition.

The figure stands 19" tall.
