Weaving Awl

Bahau, Dayak Borneo
19th Century
Previous Collection: Thomas Jaffe, New York City

Implements such as this are most of the time regarded
in a strict ethnographic sense; but the fine quality and dynamism
of this example transcends an everyday utilitarian object into fine art.
The figure is of an Aso; carved so realistic, it is almost as if it is ready to spring out into
the real world. Carved from deer antler with a fine handled patina.
In overall excellent condition.
This object is 6 inches in length.
