Stopper to Shaman’s Medicine Container

Batak, Sumatra, Indonesia
19th Century

This is a fine example of a wooden stopper to a guri-guri container. Classic in conception but dynamic in execution; this object possesses true individuality with it’s fine sculptural quality and attention to detail.  The rider exudes gravitas with its naturalistic yet stoic expression; while the Singa is conceived in a completely surrealist manner consuming miniature ancestor figures. Each of the tiny ancestors flanking the Singa show their own personality; this relentless attention to detail can only begin to suggest this stopper was owned by an important shaman.  The patina is deep and partly encrusted from decades of use.

This Stopper Stands 7.5 inches in height.
