Work Board

Kenyah, Dayak, Borneo
Early 20th Century

Provenance: Old California Collection

The Kenyah used flat wooden boards for sorting beads. This example is beautifully carved in raised-relief in a series of revolving intricate patterns. Two heads of Aso figures, dragon like zoomorphic spirits, with inlaid shell eyes are visible. Aso figures are commonly used as protective motifs in Dayak art. The wood has aged to a beautiful reddish-brown color.
