Stopper to Magical Container
Batak, Sumatra, Indonesia
Early 20th Century
Provenance: Old Belgian Collection

Batak objects reflect the dynamics of the region's cultural connections. This wooden stopper would have been paired with a Chinese porcelain magical container, or Guri Guri. The stopper has been delicately carved, and depicts the Batak's interest in animism and ancestor veneration. A stylized humanistic rider with horse hair detail sits upon a Singa figure. Singa figure's are composite creatures, combining elements of a horse, with elements of a naga figure, or mythical snake, and a humanistic face. These containers would have contain magical medicines and were carried by diviners or priests.
