Ritual Ladle

Dayak, Nagju, Borneo
19th Century

This wonderfully elegant ladle is a superb example of early Dayak artistry. Every aspect of this ladle has been carefully thought out and finished with care. From the elegant curved handle to the diminutive delicate bowl, extending to the wonderful figural element at the top. A mystical cat with its head turned completely backwards is perched on top on a finely carved Aso; ( the mythical beast in Dayak lore ). The patina shows extensive signs of handling and areas of old pigments.

This ladle stands 9 inches tall.
