Ancestor Figure

Batak (Toba) Sumatra, Indonesia
19th Century

While this Pagar figure possesses naturalistic beauty; its purpose should not be mistaken; it was created to scare enemies away with its supernatural powers. The face is well carved with tiny eyes and a delicate mouth which appears to have folds carved on each side giving the slight impression of a frown. The coiffure is beautifully executed and details such as the elongated hands with great attention to the digits of the fingers show off the carvers true skill. The patina is fine and aged from decades of use.

This figure stands 15 inches in height.
