Stopper

Makonde, Mozambique
19th Century
Previous Collection: Henrique De Brion - collected between 1914-18

With its arch-typical Makonde face this stopper was carved by a master. The scarification on the face have deeper meaning than just decoration they are clan related. But what makes this example special is the animal perched on top of the head. This is rare and most of all exhibits the inventiveness of the carver. The deep geometric patterns on the base are also very well done. An early collected example; in excellent condition.

This Stopper stands 4.5" in height
