Gold-Weight

Akan Kingdom, Ghana
19th Century or Earlier
Ex: Michael Oliver Collection, NYC

This superbly cast figurative gold-weight is a wonderful example of the attention to detail weights were given during their traditional period. The facial expression is simply sublime; a medicine man sitting on an Akan thrown with belt and medicine gourds attached; tightly grasping what appears to be a western rifle. There are many soft highpoints on this casting, these only occur from generations of handling; It also has a deep overall patina. There are areas of verdigris from exposure to the elements.

This weight stands 3.5 inches tall
