Divination Figure

Yoruba, Nigeria
19th Century
Previous Collection: William Brill, NYC INV #449X

This very fine divination figure calls upon the Thunder god Eshu. Carved from hardwood with great precision and attention to detail. The coiffure is beautiful; the braids are separated with negative space and the body is adorned with old mirrors. Mirrors give the object the ability to reflect evil away and also enhances the ‘sight’ of the piece. The patina is deep and rich with heavily worn high points. This is a rare example.

This figure stands 6 inches tall.
