Helmet Mask

Mumuye; Nigeria
Early 20th Century
Ex: Private NYC Collection

This old helmet mask from the Mumuye people possesses great strength. The front of the mask shows a face that is very reminiscent of a monkey; while the elongation of the head and its small mouth suggest something much more abstract. The wood shows obvious age, exhibiting stress fractures and erosion. There are still remains of old pigments from ceremonial dances long ago.

This mask is 13 inches long and 7 inches tall
