Headrest

Ethiopia, Gaurage
Early 20th Century

This is an old and fine example of a Ethiopian headrest. The design on the base is unique and visually appealing; three circles are in a rare pyramid formation; in addition to slits of negative space. The surface is simply wonderful; the deep oily patina suggests a long history of use. Many of these headrests are made from a softer wood and are plentiful at mediocre quality; this is one of the oldest examples I have owned and probably the most beautiful.

This headrest stands 6.5” in height.
