Miniature mask

Dan, Liberia
Early 20th Century
Previous collection: Private European collection

Of larger form this maskette is a wonderful example of a passport mask or "Ma mask" created by the Dan people of Liberia and Ivory coast. With its protruding mouth filled with teeth and its slanted brow this example has an aggressive presence. Carved from a medium density wood it has a deep patina from use. There is some erosion from exposure to the elements but this does not detract from the beauty of this object.

This mask stands 5 inches tall
