Teke Fetish Figure
Congo Republics or Gabon
Early 20th Century
PROVENANCE: Maurice Shapiro collection, acquired in the early 1980’s, by descent to family member.

Fetish figures were carved by Teke artists. This figure exhibits distinct forehead/nose/mouth, bent legs, and fetish bundle covering the entire length of the body. Although Teke figures themselves were highly conventionalized, they served a variety of different purposes. Their magical qualities were delineated by the contents of the fetish bundle.

Height: 5.25 inches
