2 Flutes and a Neck Rest
Mossi, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia
Early 20th Century
Provenance: Private New York Collection

Two flutes from Mossi, Burkina Faso and a Neck Rest form Ethiopia. The Flutes although different, are none-the-less beautiful examples of musical instruments from the Mossi. Music plays a vital role in Mossi ceremonies and mask performances. Flutes can imitate tonal patterns in speech, recreated for performance purposes. Both flutes are carved with geometric patterns. The Neck Rest is carved from a single piece of wood. The curved top supports the neck during sleep, elevating the head off the ground. This example is asymmetrical and decorated with geometric designs.
