Protective figure

Battie, Cameroon
19th Century
Previous Collection: Drs. Jean and Noble Endicott

Standing on bent legs with a protruding belly and hands classically placed on chin; this Battie figure is an ancient and expressive example. Its elongated face with large open mouth creates a very memorable image; reminiscent of the painted figures in German expressionist paintings. The patina is deep and encrusted from generations of use. Authentic old Battie figures are becoming very hard to find on the market.

This figure stands 6.25 inches tall.
