Granary Door
Dogon, Mali
19th-early 20th c.
Provenance: Dina Recanati, NYC acquired in the 1960’s. By descent to family member
These doors served to protect the window-like openings of each family’s grain storage building and employed a straightforward sliding door lock mechanism. This door is comprised of two panels firmly fastened with iron staples near the right side. Notably, the doors feature well-worn knobs for hinges and are adorned with high relief carvings of abstract figures arranged in four tiers, resulting in an aged, dark brown patina.
These doors held a sacred purpose, safeguarding the entrance and rendering it sacrosanct. The top knob reveals signs of a very old native repair, executed with a hand-forged iron staples, yet the overall condition remains highly commendable.
