Hampatong Figure
Tunjung Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia
19th-early 20th century
This powerful amulet figure from Borneo is reminiscent of the large Hampatong figures that surround and protect Dayak villages. It possesses a strong and menacing presence, with its exposed teeth and open mouth. One arm is holding its extended tongue while the other is grasping at its genitals. This lower hand’s fingers take the form of claws, suggesting transformation and a stylistic indication of its early creation. The patina is deep and blackened from decades of use and storage. Also of note is its large size; most likely it was the centerpiece and most prominent amulet on a Shaman’s necklace.
